Explanation

The protocol used to access the database could not be initialized. You will receive the following message text in the Description of this event:

Accept clients on external interface Protocol failed with error code in hexadecimal. Possible values for the Protocol in order of the most commonly found are as follows:

  • MAPIRPC
  • SMTP
  • POP3
  • NNTP

The known causes of this event are an inability to contact a global catalog server, the internal and/or external Domain Name System (DNS) has been set up incorrectly, a DNS server cannot be located, and other types of incorrect network configuration.

Specific Cause 1

This issue can occur if the Exchange Server services have not been configured to run in the Inetinfo.exe tool; these services are configured to run in the Dllhost.exe tool, or they are not configured to run in any tool. This issue typically occurs if you removed Internet Information Services (IIS) from a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server, and then reinstalled IIS, but did not reinstall Exchange server.

   
User Action

There are several actions you can try to resolve this issue.

  • Verify that the protocol settings are enabled and configured correctly.
  • Restart the Exchange server.
  • In some cases, the Exchange server could not contact the global catalog server. Set up internal and/or external DNS properly, and reconfigure the network.
  • Reinstall Exchange and Exchange service pack and hotfixes.

For information about reinstalling Exchange, do the following:

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\InetInfo\Parameters\DispatchEntries.

  3. In the Multi-String Editor dialog box, type any of the following values that are not already present:
    • “Ldapsvc” (without the quotation marks)
    • “Smtpsvc” (without the quotation marks)
    • “Nntpsvc” (without the quotation marks)
    • “Imap4svc” (without the quotation marks)
    • “Pop3svc” (without the quotation marks)
    • “Resvc” (without the quotation marks)
  4. Quit Registry Editor.
  5. Shut down the computer, and then restart it.
