Explanation

This event occurs mainly in Exchange Server versions prior to Exchange 2000. The error event is logged when the message transfer agent (MTA) checks the message for an attribute called Private Extensions. If this attribute is missing, the MTA sees that the value of this attribute has a length of 0 and so it records error event 246.

User Action

Stop and restart the MTA service. For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 168536. If the error persists, and you are running Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0, apply the latest service pack. If you are running Exchange 2000 or later and have the latest service packs applied, call Microsoft Product Support Services.

If the error persists, run the Mtacheck.exe utility. Stop the MTA service, open a command prompt, and type Mtacheck /v /f <Log file name>.LOG.
