Explanation

This Error event indicates that the Microsoft® Exchange POP3 (MSExchangePOP3) service has disabled protocol logging on the Client Access server where the MSExchangePOP3 service runs. The MSExchangePOP3 service disables protocol logging because the specified configuration attribute in the Microsoft.Exchange.Pop3.exe.config file has an invalid value. The Microsoft.Exchange.Pop3.exe.config file contains configuration information for the MSExchangePOP3 service. Users who access their e-mail using a POP3 client are not affected by this event.

User Action

To resolve the error, set a valid value for the specified parameter in the Microsoft.Exchange.Pop3.exe.config file by following these steps:

  1. Open the configuration file, Microsoft.Exchange.Pop3.exe.config, for editing in notepad. The configuration file is located under the file path <SystemDrive>\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\PopImap.

Note   In the file path, <SystemDrive> refers to the drive where Microsoft® Exchange Server 2007 is installed.

  2. Set the parameter indicated by “%1” to a valid value.

For more information about some of the protocol logging parameters, see How to Enable Protocol Logging for POP3 and IMAP4.

  3. Save the file.

  4. Restart the Microsoft Exchange POP3 service (MSExchangePOP3) from the Services snap-in.

If you are not already doing so, consider running the tools that Microsoft Exchange offers to help administrators analyze and troubleshoot their Exchange environment. These tools can help you make sure that your configuration is in line with Microsoft best practices. They can also help you identify and resolve performance issues, improve mail flow, and better manage disaster recovery scenarios. Go to the Toolbox node of the Exchange Management Console to run these tools now. For more information about these tools, see Toolbox in the Exchange Server 2007 Help.
