This Error event indicates the specified transport database is being used and can’t be opened for exclusive access by the Microsoft Exchange Transport service by using the credentials of the Network Service user account. EdgeTransport.exe and MSExchangeTransport.exe are the executable files that are used by the Microsoft Exchange Transport service. This service runs on every Hub Transport server and Edge Transport server. The extensible storage engine (ESE) databases that are used on a Hub Transport server or Edge Transport server are the message queue database or the Content Filtering database.

This error may be cause by the following conditions:

• The Microsoft Exchange Transport service has failed. The failed service may be busy writing to a crash dump file, or may have stopped responding indefinitely. Any new instance of the Microsoft Exchange Transport service that is started will be unable to mount the specified database.

• File-based antivirus software is trying to operate on the specified database files.

• The Volume Shadow Copy Service or another backup service is trying to back up the specified database files.

To resolve this error do one or more of the following:

• Wait a few moments to allow the failed instance of the Microsoft Exchange Transport service to completely stop. Then, in the Services console on the Exchange server, start the Microsoft Exchange Transport service.

• Verify that the following permissions are applied at the location of the specified database:

  • Network Service: Full Control

  • System: Full Control

  • Administrators: Full Control

  The location of the message queue database and the Content Filtering database is controlled by the EdgeTransport.exe.config application configuration file that is located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Bin. By default, the message queue database is located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\TransportRoles\data\Queue. By default, the Content Filtering database is located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\TransportRoles\data\IpFilter. • Exclude the location of the specified database from any file-based antivirus software that is running on the Hub Transport server or Edge Transport server.

• Exclude the location of the specified database from any backup software that is running on the Hub Transport server or Edge Transport server.

• Restart the server.
