: Failed to bring the resource online.

Details
Product: Exchange
Event ID: 1003
Source: MSExchangeCluster
Version: 6.5.6940.0
Component: Microsoft Exchange Cluster Service
Message: <name>: Failed to bring the resource online.

Explanation

This event indicates that the Cluster service failed to bring the named resource online. The reasons for this could be many and there could be related events in the application and system logs (and in the cluster log) that can provide an explanation as to the cause of this error.

  • The ClusterEnabled setting in the metabase is set to 0 instead of 1.
  • Too many storage groups have been configured on the cluster so that the Exchange cluster cannot failover properly. Exchange Server is limited to four storage groups for each server. This is a physical limitation and applies to each node of a cluster as well.
  • The groups Exchange Domain Servers, Exchange Enterprise Servers, and Exchange Services may have been moved out of the USERS container in Active Directory.
  • Permissions issues on the Organization, Administrative Group, or Server levels could have been modified.

User Action
  • Use METAEDIT to change the ClusterEnabled bit to 1. You can get this tool from the IIS 4 Resource Kit.
  • Make sure that you have configured the allowed number of Storage Groups per node.
  • Ensure that the Exchange Domain Servers, Exchange Enterprise Servers, and Exchange Services groups are present in the USERS container in Active Directory.
  • Ensure that the permissions on the Organization, Administrative Group, or Server levels are at their defaults.
