OALGen encountered error %1 (internal ID %2) accessing the public folder store while generating the offline address list for address list ‘%3’.- %4

Details
Product: Exchange
Event ID: 9331
Source: MSExchangeSA
Version: 8.0
Symbolic Name: evtOALPFStoreError
Message: OALGen encountered error %1 (internal ID %2) accessing the public folder store while generating the offline address list for address list ‘%3’.
– %4

Explanation

This Error event indicates that OALGen experienced an error when it tried to generate the offline address list specified in the event description. Specifically, it experienced an error when it tried to access the offline address list system folder. A common cause of this issue is Active Directory directory service replication. The offline address list object is not synchronized throughout the forest. When an offline address list is added via the Exchange Management Console, the offline address list object is added to Active Directory. The actual contents of the offline address list are generated when the Site Folder Maintenance process runs. If the domain controller used by the Exchange server hosting the offline address book (OAB) does not have a replica of the offline address list in question, the OAB generation will fail with a 9331 event and accompanying 9335 event. A common symptom of this error is that Microsoft Outlook clients report the following error message in the Outlook synchronization folder: Task ‘Microsoft Exchange Server’ reported error (0x8004010F): The operation failed. An object could not be found.

If you also notice MSExchangeSA Event 9333, ensure that you have configured the appropriate replicas for your offline address list system folders.

For information about OABs, see Understanding Offline Address Books. For information about how to manage OABs, see Managing Offline Address Books.

User Action

To resolve this Error event, do one or more of the following:

  • Ensure that Active Directory replication has completed successfully throughout the domain where the OAB resides.

  • Wait for the scheduled Site Folder Maintenance process to start and complete.

  • Dismount and remount the MAPI Public Folder Information store. The Site Folder Maintenance process is performed when mounting the MAPI Public Folder Information store.

  • Increase MSExchangeIS diagnostic logging and examine the Application event log for Event ID 3043, which logs site-folder maintenance errors.

  • If you cannot resolve this issue, contact Microsoft Product Support. For more information about how to contact support, visit the Contact Us page of the Microsoft Help and Support Web site.

For more information about how to troubleshoot offline address download problems experienced by your Outlook clients, see Troubleshooting OAB Download Issues with Outlook Diagnostic Logging.

If you are not already doing so, consider running the tools that Microsoft Exchange offers to help administrators analyze and troubleshoot their Exchange environment. These tools can help you make sure that your configuration is in line with Microsoft best practices. They can also help you identify and resolve performance issues, improve mail flow, and better manage disaster recovery scenarios. Go to the Toolbox node of the Exchange Management Console to run these tools now. For more information about these tools, see Toolbox in the Exchange Server 2007 Help.

Message: OALGen encountered error %1 (internal ID %2) accessing the public folder store while generating the offline address list for address list ‘%3’.- %4

Explanation

This Error event indicates that OALGen experienced an error when it tried to generate the offline address list specified in the event description. Specifically, it experienced an error when it tried to access the offline address list system folder. A common cause for this problem is that the hierarchy of the public folder servers that contain your offline address lists are not synchronized. Your Microsoft® Outlook® clients will not be able to download offline address lists until you resolve this problem. Resolving MSExchangeSA event 9331 frequently resolves MSExchangeSA event 9335.

A common symptom of this error is that Outlook clients are reporting the following error message in the Outlook synchronization folder:

“Task ‘Microsoft Exchange Server’ reported error (0x8004010F) : ‘The operation failed. An object could not be found.'”

If you also notice MSExchangeSA event 9333, you may have to make sure that you have configured the appropriate replicas for your offline address list systems folders. For information about MSExchangeSA hierarchy, search the Events and Errors Message Center Web site.

User Action

To resolve this error

  1. Synchronize the hierarchy of the public folder servers by doing the following:

    1. In Exchange System Manager, expand Administrative Groups, and then expand the group that you want to work with.

    2. Expand Folders, right-click the appropriate top-level hierarchy, and then click Synchronize Hierarchy.

    3. In the message dialog box, when you are prompted to confirm that you want to start replication, click Yes if you are sure that you want to perform this operation. The replication of the hierarchy starts after you click Yes. The replication may take several hours or longer to finish.

If your public folder tree hierarchy and network infrastructure are large, you may want to perform this operation during non-peak hours. When you replicate the public folder hierarchy, you may cause a significant amount of replication traffic.

  2. Rebuild the offline address list specified in the event message by doing the following:

    1. In System Manager, in the console tree, double-click Recipients, and then click Offline Address Lists.

    2. In the details pane, right-click the offline address list you want to rebuild, and then click Rebuild.

You can use the Offline Address Book Integrity (OABInteg) tool to troubleshoot offline address list problems. For information about how to use the OABInteg tool, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 907792, Description of the Offline Address Book Integrity (OABInteg) tool.
