Explanation

In Event Viewer, Event  IDs 700, 701, and 1221 messages are logged in

the Application event log. These messages indicate that the first online

maintenance interval that is scheduled, successfully completed.  In normal

circumstances, ESE Event ID 700 indicates that online defragmentation of a

specific database has begun a full pass of defragmentation.  This is followed by ESE Event ID

701 which indicates that online defragmentation has finished a full pass of

defragmentation.

Event ID 701 is followed by MSExchangeIS Event ID 1221, which indicates how much

space has been freed up by the online defragmentation process.  These

messages indicate that online maintenance has successfully completed.

In Exchange 2000, you can run online maintenance for the

information store only once in a 24-hour period on the server. You can use

the Customize option to configure maintenance to run more than once in a

day.  However, if online maintenance is scheduled to run more than once in a

24-hour period, online maintenance runs through only the first maintenance

interval that is scheduled, and then ignores all the other scheduled run

times for the day.

It is important ensure that an Event ID 700 is followed in

sequence by Event ID 701 and then Event ID 1221.  If Event ID 701 does not appear, then online defragmentation
never completed.  This can be due to a number of reasons, including

corruption at the Information Store level or Jet Database level, or the

maintenance interval may be too short or set to always, not allowing the defragmentation to finish.

Another reason is that the online maintenance window and the online Exchange backup window may be overlapping. Online maintenance cannot run while an online

backup is running at the same time.

User Action

In normal circumstances, no user action is required.  If you receive

Event ID 700 but never receive Event ID 701, this indicates a problem.

You may view or adjust the Information Store Maintenance period in the

Exchange System Manager by right-clicking the Information Store database,

clicking Properties, clicking the Database tab, and adjusting the

Maintenance Interval Schedule.  To make sure that online defragmentation

runs, you must allot enough time for all eight of the online maintenance

processes to complete and for online defragmentation to follow.  It is

recommended to leave the default schedule of “Run daily from Midnight to 4:00

AM” or if you change the schedule, do not shorten the maintenance interval.

It is suggested not to set the Maintenance Interval at the same time as the

online Exchange-aware backup is scheduled.  It is suggested not to attempt to dismount the database during online

maintenance, because the dismounting may take several minutes to complete.

If you suspect information store or Jet database corruption, check the

application log for related warnings and errors concerning ESE or MSExchangeIS

that may indicate database problems.
