Version: 6.5.6940.0
Component: Microsoft Exchange Information Store
Message: The database “<name>” has <number> megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.

Explanation

This event is logged after every online defragmentation of the database has been completed. Online defragmentation does not allow the database file to shrink. This event tells you how much space could be recovered by an offline defragmentation.

User Action

Normally, this event can be ignored as the space will be used in future database operations. However, if an operation has been recently performed that removed many objects from the database, and you need the space to be recovered for use by other applications or databases, you can perform an offline defrag during off-hours. Examples of operations that could free pages within the database:

  • Moving a large number of users to a different server.
  • Changing the retention time or disk quota for deleted items.
  • Receiving a large number of messages (for example, junk e-mail), and then deleting the messages.

For more information, see 186291 XADM: Cannot Determine Free Space Available in Exchange DB. To determine the total amount of disk space that could be recovered in an offline defrag, see 195914 XADM: Determining Database Free Space with Exchange 5.5 SP1.
