SAV for Linux – Central Managed, registration failure Bad response from server 400

In Sophos Anti Virus for Linux – Central Managed, there is an issue which can cause the registration with Central to fail during install. The failure will be seen to have the error: “Bad response from server 400”.

This is caused by an error in the way the SAV for Linux installer and registration handles IPv6 addresses on the loopback interface.

This article describes the steps to resolve the issue….

The following sections are covered:

Applies to the following Sophos products and versions

Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux

The issue is caused in the Central registration process as the installer converts the configured IP address to text, but misses one of the two necessary colons – it uses “:” rather than “::” . If there is an address configured for an IPv6 interface , which is not the “::1” address (ignored as used for the loopback address). Then the registration will not complete and the error will be generated.

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host

inet6 addr: ::2/128 Scope:Compat

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1

The typical error will be similar to this:

2019-02-13 14:55:22,266 ERROR sophosmgmtd.mcsclient.MCSConnection: Bad response from server 400: (Bad Request)

ERROR: Repeated HTTP Errors from Sophos Central (400)

2019-02-13 14:55:22,267 CRITICAL _main_: Failed to register with Sophos Central (5)

ERROR: Failed to register with Sophos Central - error 5

A correction to this issue is progressed. Until then, the workaround is to configure the loopback interface with a single IPv6 address:

lo Link encap:Local Loopback

inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0

inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host

UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1
