Time Provider NtpClient: This machine is configured to use the domain hierarchy to determine its time source, but it is the PDC emulator for the domain at the root of the forest, so there is no machine above it in the domain hierarchy to use as a time source. It is recommended that you either configure a reliable time service in the root domain, or manually configure the PDC to synchronize with an external time source. Otherwise, this machine will function as the authoritative time source in the domain hierarchy. If an external time source is not configured or used for this computer, you may choose to disable the NtpClient.

Explanation

By default, the primary domain controller (PDC) emulator for the forest root domain does not have any source of time. To ensure that time in the forest remains synchronized with the rest of the world, a time source should be configured for the PDC emulator.

This event is often logged when a new forest is created following the promotion of the first domain controller (DC). It is also logged when the PDC emulator role is seized or transferred to another DC.

User Action

Do one or more of the following:

  • Configure a local, secure hardware time source to the system, such as a Global Positioning System (GPS) or Radio clock.
  • Configure a reliable network source that communicates over Internet Protocol Security (ISPEC).
  • Configure a nonsecure time source, such as an Internet Network Time Protocol (NTP) time source.

For more information about configuring Windows Time Service on the PDC emulator, see the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Deployment Kit Designing and Deploying Directory and Security Services Reference.
