In Event Viewer, event 700, 701, and 1221 messages are logged in the Application log. These messages indicate that the first online maintenance interval that is scheduled has successfully completed. ESE event 700 indicates that online defragmentation of a specific database has begun full defragmentation. This is followed by ESE event 701, which indicates that online defragmentation has finished full defragmentation. Event 701 is followed by MSExchangeIS event 1221. This indicates how much space has been freed by the online defragmentation process. These messages indicate that online maintenance has successfully completed.
In Exchange, you can run online maintenance for the Exchange store only one time in a 24-hour period on the server. You can use the Customize option to configure maintenance to run more than one time in a day. However, if online maintenance is scheduled to run more than one time in a 24-hour period, online maintenance runs through only the first maintenance interval that is scheduled, and then ignores all the other scheduled run times for the day.
Make sure that event 700 is followed in sequence by event 701, and then event 1221. If event 701 does not appear, online defragmentation never completed. This can be caused by several reasons, which include corruption at the Exchange store level, or ESE database level. In addition, the maintenance interval may be too short or set to always, therefore not enabling the defragmentation to finish.
Another reason is that the online maintenance window and the online Exchange backup window may be overlapping. Online maintenance cannot run when an online backup is running.
No user action is required. However, if ESE event ID 700 is logged and event 701 is not logged, this indicates a problem.
If you suspect Exchange store or ESE database corruption, check the Application log for related warnings and errors about ESE or MSExchangeIS that may indicate database problems.
You can view or adjust the Exchange store maintenance period in the Exchange System Manager by right-clicking the database, clicking Properties, clicking the Database tab, and adjusting the Maintenance Interval Schedule setting. To make sure that online defragmentation runs, you must allocate enough time for all eight of the online maintenance processes to complete and for online defragmentation to follow. Leave the default schedule of Run daily from Midnight to 4:00 AM. If you change the schedule, do not shorten the maintenance interval. Do not set the maintenance interval at the same time the online Exchange-aware backup is scheduled. Do not try to disconnect from the database during online maintenance because the disconnect may take several minutes to finish.
