The NetBios over TCP/IP (NetBT) key could not be opened.

Product: Windows Operating System
Event ID: 4128
Source: Wins
Version: 5.0
Component: System Event Log
Message: The NetBios over TCP/IP (NetBT) key could not be opened.

This event record indicates that the Linkage subkey in the registry could not be opened. The NETBT configuration is stored in the registry under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NETBT subkey. WINS uses the values in the NETBT subkey to send and receive client requests and responses.

User Action

Check the registry to see if the Linkage subkey exists and its values are correct. If anything is missing or incorrect, reinstall TCP/IP.

If your computer registers multiple IP addresses, you need to use multiple network adapters. Each network adapter should have its own unique IP address so the computer can register with WINS as multihomed. The NetBIOS name will then reference each of the IP addresses, and when that NetBIOS name is queried by a client, the WINS server will return all of the registered addresses in response to the query.
