Event ID 4001 — TCP/IP Network Performance

Event ID 4001 — TCP/IP Network Performance

Updated: January 7, 2009

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2

Network performance encompasses all aspects of data transfer performance, such as download and upload speeds, number of packets dropped versus packets delivered, and the round-trip time of connections.

These aspects of network performance might be affected by congestion in the network. In the case of wireless networks, signal attenuation, electromagnetic interference, and the mobility of the host also affect network performance.

Event Details

Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 4001
Source: tcpip
Version: 6.1
Symbolic Name: EVENT_TCPIP_TIMER_ATTACK
Message: Unable to allocate a %2 byte message.

Resolve
Reduce the load on the remote computer

If the packets are dropped because of network congestion and poor network performance, reduce the load on, or increase the capacity of, the computer.

Verify

To perform this procedure, you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To measure network performance, run Performance Monitor:

  1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
  2. Type perfmon, and then press ENTER.
  3. Click Continue when prompted by User Account Control, and then provide the administrator password, if requested.
  4. In the Performance Monitor console tree, click Reliability and Performance.
  5. Network, CPU, and memory utilization data are available in the details pane.

If you have recorded Performance Monitor counters in the past, compare the current load to your average loads over time. If you do not have any baseline readings from past performance monitoring, continue to monitor network, CPU, and memory utilization by looking for large fluctuations in performance that might indicate a heavy traffic load or an attack.

Event ID 4001 — DNS Server Active Directory Integration

Event ID 4001 — DNS Server Active Directory Integration

Updated: November 13, 2007

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

You can configure the DNS Server service to use Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to store zone data. This makes it possible for the DNS server to rely on directory replication, which enhances security, reliability, and ease of administration.

Event Details

Product: Windows Operating System
ID: 4001
Source: Microsoft-Windows-DNS-Server-Service
Version: 6.0
Symbolic Name: DNS_EVENT_DS_ZONE_OPEN_FAILED
Message: The DNS server was unable to open zone %1 in the Active Directory. This DNS server is configured to obtain and use information from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it. Check that the Active Directory is functioning properly and reload the zone. The event data is the error code.

Resolve
Troubleshoot AD DS and reload the zone

The DNS Server service relies on Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) to store and retrieve information for AD DS-integrated zones. This error indicates that AD DS is not responding to requests from the DNS Server service. Ensure that AD DS is functioning properly, troubleshoot any problems, and then reload the zone.

For information about troubleshooting AD DS, see Active Directory Troubleshooting Topics (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=95789).

To perform this procedure, you must have membership in Administrators, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To reload a zone:

  1. On the DNS server, start Server Manager. To start Server Manager, click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
  2. In the console tree, expand Roles, expand DNS Server, and then expand DNS.
  3. Expand the DNS server, and then expand the folder containing the zone that you want to reload.
  4. Right-click the zone, and then click Reload.

Verify

Ensure that Event IDs 4523 and 4524 are being logged and that no events in the range 4000 to 4019 appear in the Domain Name System (DNS) event log.

Process %1: %2 failed. Exception returned is %3. This event may occur when Availability Service cannot discover an Availability Service in the remote forest.

Details
Product: Exchange
Event ID: 4001
Source: MSExchange Availability
Version: 8.0
Symbolic Name: AutoDiscoverFailed
Message: Process %1: %2 failed. Exception returned is %3. This event may occur when Availability Service cannot discover an Availability Service in the remote forest.

Explanation

This Error event indicates that the Microsoft® Exchange Autodiscover service could not discover the Exchange Availability service that is running in a remote Active Directory® directory service forest. The Exchange Autodiscover service that runs on a Front End server that is running Exchange Server 2007 (also known as Exchange Client Access server) is a Web service that locates a mailbox. The Exchange Availability service is also a Web service that retrieves the Schedule+ Free Busy and Out-of-Office (OOF) data for that specific mailbox. This event may occur when an Exchange 2007 Client Access server and user mailbox are in different Active Directory forests. Because the Exchange Autodiscover service cannot directly connect to a mailbox that resides in a remote Active Directory forest, it requests that the Exchange Availability service that is running in the remote Active Directory forest retrieve the requested information locally.

Note   This event does not occur if the user mailbox resides servers that are running Exchange 2000 or Exchange 2003.

This event may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  • The Active Directory site or forest that contains the user mailbox does not have a local Exchange 2007 server that runs the Exchange Availability service.

  • The Exchange Availability service finds issues when it tries to connect to the remote Active Directory forest.

User Action

To resolve this error, take one or more of the following steps:

  • Make sure that the Active Directory site or forest that contains the user mailbox has at least one local Exchange 2007 server that runs the Exchange Availability service.

  • Use the Ping or PathPing command-line tools to test basic connectivity. Use Ping to isolate network hardware problems and incompatible configurations. Use PathPing to detect packet loss over multiple-hop trips. For more information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 325487, How to troubleshoot network connectivity problems.

  • Increase the diagnostic logging level of the MSExchange Autodiscover service. To do this, follow the steps shown here:

Incorrectly editing the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Problems resulting from editing the registry incorrectly may not be able to be resolved. Before editing the registry, back up any valuable data.

    1. Start Registry Editor (regedit).

    2. Locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchange Autodiscover\Diagnostics

    3. In the results pane, change the Value data of all keys (except Default) to 5.

    4. Exit Registry Editor.

  • Review other related Warning events and Error events in the Application and System log. These related events may help you find the root cause of this event.

If you cannot resolve this error using the options suggested here, contact Microsoft Product Support Services. For more information, visit the Microsoft Help and Support Web site.

Volume Shadow Copy Service: Cannot find Diff Area for creating shadow copies.

Details
Product: Windows Operating System
Event ID: 4001
Source: VSS
Version: 5.2.3790.1830
Message: Volume Shadow Copy Service: Cannot find Diff Area for creating shadow copies.

Explanation

To maintain shadow copies, Volume Shadow Copy Service must perform the copy-on-write operation to a shadow copy storage area (also referred to as a Diff Area). If Volume Shadow Copy Service cannot find a suitable volume for storing this area or if it encounters problems in writing to this area, then shadow copies for the volume will be deleted. To successfully create a shadow copy, at least one NTFS volume is required with at least 300 megabytes (MB) of free space.

Cause

Possible causes include:

  • An issue is preventing Volume Shadow Copy Service from finding or writing to a suitable volume for the Diff Area.

User Action

Do one of the following:

  • Reduce the system or I/O load and retry the operation.
  • Check the Diff Area association and configuration.
  • Check the volume where the Diff Area is stored for errors or hardware issues.
  • Do not store the Diff Area on any kind of storage device that can be easily removed from the system.
  • Do not store the Diff Area on any kind of storage device that may not be available to Windows until late in the system startup sequence. For example, a LUN created on an Internet SCSI (iSCSI) storage subsystem may not appear until a software initiator has started.
