Receiver for Windows – Google Chrome does not open Launch.ica file automatically

Important Note: Before making any Google Chrome changes stated in this article, it is important to have the latest version of Citrix Receiver installed on your operating system. Citrix Receiver for Windows 3.1 or higher is required for use with Google Chrome.

If you are experiencing issues with Citrix Receiver for Windows, complete the following three step procedure:

  1. Run the tool (refer to Receiver Clean-Up Utility) to clean-up a corrupt or previous installation of Citrix Receiver.

    Note: If using Windows, check in Control Panel > Programs and Features or Add/Remove Programs that the Citrix Receiver software is no longer present.

  2. Restart your computer.

  3. Download and install the latest Citrix Receiver

Solution 1 – Disable the Citrix ICA Client Plugin

After completing the preceding procedure, complete the following steps:

  1. On Google Chrome, Click User-added image and choose Settings.

  2. Click Show advanced settings…

  3. Under Privacy, click Content settings….

  4. Under Plug-ins, click Disable individual plug-ins…

  5. Click Disable for Citrix ICA Client.

    If Disable option is not available, confirm that the latest version of Citrix Receiver is installed for your operating system. For the latest version of Citrix Receiver, click here.

    If you are unable to see the “Disable individual plug-ins” link, open chrome://plugins from the addressbar.

Solution 2 – Enable Chrome to Open ICA Files Automatically

Enable Google Chrome to automatically open the launch ICA files. When the launch.ica file downloads in Google Chrome, click the drop-down list for the file in the download bar and select Always Open Files of This Type.

App Layering Recipe For Google Chrome 2.6 or Later

Unidesk recommends including the OS Type and OS bit level in the name, for Example Google Chrome 31 Win7x32. For versions remember that when choosing a layer you can see the version name but not the version description. Use naming that will allow you to differentiate versions appropriately. For example “1.0 12-12-2013”.
The basic installation steps are straight forward:

  1. Create a Google Chrome application layer
    1. Install Chrome using the offline installer or msi
    2. Note on extensions
    3. Disable Google Updates (optional)
  2. Configure Chrome AD GPO’s
  3. Apply the layer to desired desktops

Step 1 Create a Google Chrome Application Layer

The first step is to install Chrome itself. Download the offline installer from here:

Choose the Alternate installer for all user accounts. Then install Chrome. It will install into the “Program Files” directory.

To install extensions please use a GPO

Disable Updates

There are two ways that can be used to disable Google Updates for Chrome. You can use the enterprise GPOs, see the next section or follow this link to disable via the registry

or set the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesGoogleUpdateAutoUpdateCheckPeriodMinutes to the REG_DWORD value of “0”.

Step 2 (Optional but recommended) Install and configure the Google Enterprise Active Directory Templates In Order To Manage These Settings

The Goggle Chromium project has created a set of GPO settings that can be used to manage Chrome in an Enterprise Environment.

Once you have the ADM files installed its very easy to configure Chrome settings.


If you are using a GPO to disable updates just add a version to your layer and open Chrome it will automatically update. If you have used the registry setting to disable updates modify the registry setting to a number other than 0 and open chrome, it will update then you can set the registry entry back to 0. Note: If this doesn’t work for you let me know I was not able to test this in the lab.

If you have enabled any updates through scheduled tasks, disable that as well.

Considerations for Non-Persistent Desktops

It is not possible to add custom extensions for a single user with a NP desktop.

a. Select the file you want to view and tap the Preview icon .

c. Select the app you want to view your file with based on the apps available on your Android tablet.

d. You can choose to make the app chosen as default by selecting the Use by default for this action. checkbox.

4. To share a file:

a. Select the file you want to share and tap the Share

b. When the file is downloaded, tap the Share menu option in the top right corner of your screen.

c. Select the app you want to view your file with based on the apps available on your Android tablet.

5. To edit a file:

a. Select the file you want to edit and tap the Edit icon.

b. The app goes in to screen sharing mode. However, only the selected file is opened on your remote computer.

c. Make your edits and save the file directly on your remote computer.

Note: If you are on Android 4.0 or newer, Microsoft Office documents can be edited directly on the app and the changes are saved on the remote computer.

Troubleshooting Sharefile browser issues

1. Clear browsing cookies and history.

Chrome:- Browser settings->More tools->Clear browsing data.

IE: Internet settings->Advanced settings->delete browsing history.

2. Close and re-launch the browser.

3.Update the chrome to latest version.
