  4. Disable the encryption requirement on all CAS servers
  5. Deploy a Group Policy setting to update existing Outlook profiles with RPC encryption

The first, three can be configured by the end-user, while the last two are only for Servers.

1] Delete Default Profile

  • Launch Outlook, and then click on Info > Account settings dropdown > Manage Profile
  • It will open the Mail Setup window. Click on Show Profiles button.
  • Delete the default profile by clicking on the Remove button.
  • Restart Outlook.

When you remove the profile, all offline cached content for its account will be removed. However, you can backup the OST profile to reuse it.

When you relaunch Outlook, you will have to create a new profile, and then go through the setup process again.

2] Create a New Outlook Profile

If you do not want to delete, you can create a new default profile. At the Mail Setup > Profiles section, you can click on the Add button, and then give a name to the profile. Most of the users have all email accounts under one single profile. You must run this cmdlet for all Client Access servers that are running Exchange Server 2010 or later version. Rerun this command for each Exchange server that has the Client Access Server role. Also, make sure to disable RPC encryption, which we talked about in the above step.

However, make sure to enable it back again after deployment with changes to the RPC requirement on the Outlook.

Sophos is aware of a new method of attack that allows the execution of malicious code on an email without the use of attachments or macros. Reports suggest that it is possible to run Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) attacks in Microsoft Outlook using emails and calendar invites formatted using Microsoft Outlook Rich Text Format (RTF).

The following sections are covered:

After receiving a malicious RTF email with the DDE attack included the user needs to click Reply or Reply All to start the attack. The user will then be prompted with two warning boxes shown below, if they select No to either of these that attack will fail.

The attack may come in the form of a calendar invite instead of an email. If a user opens the invite from calendar then it will prompt the same two boxes where selecting No will also stop the attack.

If a user clicks Forward on one of these emails it will not trigger the attack; However, if the user receiving the forwarded email clicks Reply or Reply All then this will trigger the attack and the same warning boxes will be displayed.

Previous versions of this attack discovered recently, used malicious Microsoft Office documents to run the DDE attack without the use of Macros. For those attacks, an attachment was still required on the spam email. Sophos detects those emails/attachments in a number of ways:

  • CXmail/OffDDE-*: for the spam emails containing the malicious attachments
  • Troj/DocDl-DJV: DDE attachments that try to download additional malware
  • HPmal/Crusher-V: Behavioral based detection (HIPS) for identifying suspicious activity

For customers using Sophos Intercept X or Exploit Prevention these Microsoft Office attachments are also stopped by the Lockdown exploit protection.

The new DDE attack which does not use attachments and instead includes the malicious code in the body of the RTF email has not been seen in wide usage yet. For the spam samples Sophos has seen using this technique they are detected by Sophos email scanning products as:

  • CXmail/OffDDE-* and Troj/RtfDDE-*: for the spam emails containing the malicious attachments

Additionally in previous attacks where attachments were used, the payloads seen being download included the information stealing malware TrikBot, detected as: HPmal/TrikBot-* and the Locky ransomware, detected as: Troj/Locky-*

Further behavioral based detection capabilities in Sophos HIPS is being added.

For Sophos customers using the XG Firewall, SFOS or Cyberoam new IPS signatures have been added.

Note: As DDE is part of Microsoft office and considered a feature, the new IPS signatures are classed as Informational which means the traffic will be set to Allow by default. Customers wanting to block this traffic will need to select Drop Packet for the below signatures.

Educate users to the potential threat. The attack relies on user interaction and can be easily stopped by the user just clicking No on either of the two warning messages.

Ensure the security products used are following the best practice recommendations.

Additionally for Sophos Endpoint/Server customers, decrease the attack surface by choosing to block certain applications using Application Control. Script files such as .js, .wsf, .ps1 and HTML Applications .hta are commonly used by malware authors to install the malicious payloads on the computer. To block these, add the following to the blocked list:

I need a solution

Installed Encryption Desktop 10.4.2. on Windows 10 Pro.  I cannot send email.  I have configured PGP to kick in when I select the SIGN or Encrypt button in Outlook but whenever I send email, (regardless if I press the SIGN or ENCRYPT button,) Outlook sends the email and then it crashes.

I have enabled Verbose loging in PGP.  When I send unsecured email, it stats that it is sending unsecured message.  then it reloads Outlook Plugin: Loaded sucessfully.

When I draft an email and select the Encryption button, PGP finds the email but then the statu displayed by PGP on the right hand corner of my screen reads “Delaying email for user confirmation…”  The PGP verbose log reads “Encrypting to 1 user-defined Master Keys.  Outlook closes.   When I opten email, it attempt to secure the email that is sitting in the Outbox. Verbose logs states theat Outlook Plugins are loaded sucessfully.  

When I stop PGP services, Outlook functions normally.

Share a File from Connectors (Web App 4.6 and later)

Navigate to the Network Share or SharePoint location where your file is stored. To share, right-click a file and choose Email with ShareFile or Get a Link.

This feature allows you to share on-premises files with the same customizable Notification and Security message options available for files stored on ShareFile servers. The Expiration Policy you set in Message Options will override that of the File Box. When sharing on-premises files, your file is copied to the File Box where it is subsequently downloaded by your recipient. Your recipient does not download files directly from your on-premises storage location. Due to this behavior, please allow your file time to upload to the File Box when using the Get a Link option.

Your file is copied to the File Box when it is sent. Due to this behavior, your recipient will receive the version of your file as it was at the time of the share. Updates to your file are not automatically uploaded to the File Box. If you update your file, you must compose another message to send the latest version of the file.


Supported Apps

Connector Sharing is supported on the following ShareFile apps:

  • ShareFile for Android v4.1 and later
  • ShareFile for Windows 10 v4.1 and later
  • ShareFile for iOS v4.0 and later
  • ShareFile Web App v4.6 and later
  • ShareFile Plugin for Microsoft Outlook v3.9 and later
  • ShareFile Desktop App v1.4 and later.


Note Regarding Restricted Zones

A user cannot use this feature if their File Box is located on a Restricted Zone.


Note regarding Users Provisioned by XenMobile

User accounts provisioned by a XenMobile server do not receive File Box access. ShareFile recommends provisioning users via the User Management Tool or manually enabling the “Use personal File Box” permission for each user.


Known Issues

  • If the user attempting to share from a CIFS Connector has an on-premise File Box, the share may fail. In the event of this error, ShareFile recommends using NTLM authentication.


Limitations

  • Folders cannot be shared using this method
